Knox County has a lot of positives. We are the home of the main campus of the University of Tennessee, which includes some exciting sports! We have a good school system, lots of green spaces, and historic buildings and venues. These are positive and need to be supported.
Unfortunately, we also have areas where hope seems to be in short supply... I believe that we are called on to help and support our neighbors. This means supporting public education, making sure that there are good jobs to be found, and helping those who are in need. Some might think this makes me a bleeding heart Democrat, and I would counter by saying it makes me a person who is a Democrat, but I am also a person who has lived and worked hard.
Before becoming a teacher, I worked in various jobs, including jobs in the service industry. I know what it is like to work and work and still wonder if you will have enough money to pay your bills. I know what it means to have to decide how you are going to stretch your paycheck to pay for the necessities, not just the things you want, but the things you need. Some people seem to believe there are people who are less than themselves, but I believe we all have greatness within us, if we have the support we need to achieve it. That is why I became a teacher and that is why I want to serve on the County Commission.
That being said, I am an optimist. I believe if we work hard, we can achieve our goals. I believe that if we work together, we can support the entire community, not just sections of the county. I believe that every voice has as much value as every other voice and we need to pay attention to not just our friends, but especially those with whom we may not agree.
Because I believe these things, I would appreciate your vote.
